St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing
Remembering St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, Carbondale, PA
Not long after St. Joseph’s Hospital was founded, local officials recognized the need to educate nurses in order to adequately staff the growing hospital. Their answer to the Nursing shortage of the 1920’s was simple, if you need nurses, open a School of Nursing.
By 1929, the first class of eleven students graduated from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing. The School of Nursing continued to attract and educate highly qualified students interested in the nursing vocation until the last graduating class finished their studies in 1978. In total, more than 850 students received a nursing diploma
from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing.
Marian Community Hospital is pleased to employ many graduates of St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing. Additionally, the community is happy that many graduates have continued their careers in the nursing profession and built upon the foundation of education and compassionate care they learned from their alma mater.
